Spanish class is an elective open to seventh and eighth
graders. Students will learn over two thousand new
vocabulary words, master fundamental concepts to allow
them to read, write and speak Spanish. This class provides
a strong foundation in cultural awareness, grammar,
and oral language skills, preparing them or Spanish
2 at the high school level. Spanish also helps students
improve their English skills!
Spanish 1A, Spanish 1B ad Spanish for Spanish-Speakers are both one-year courses.
Spanish 1A is available to seventh
and eighth graders. Seventh graders who complete one
year of Spanish 1A, maintaining A's and B's throughout
the year, may continue to the Spanish 1B (advanced
course) during their eighth grade year. Eighth graders
who successfully complete one or two years of Spanish
at Bancroft will continue their study of Spanish in
high school.
It's important to note that for eighth graders only,
Spanish 1A or 1B counts as the first year of their foreign
language requirement for any college or university. This
is because Spanish 1 is a University-certified course
at the eighth grade level. In addition, eighth graders
who maintain a B- average throughout the year are subsequently
placed in Spanish 2 or Spanish Speakers 2 at the beginning
of ninth grade. Students who attend a private high school will have to take a placement test.
