Patriotic Message: Today is International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day was commemorated in the United States during the 1910s and 1920s, but then dwindled. It was revived during the women's movement in the 1960s. In 1975, the U.N. began sponsoring International Women's Day. International Women's Day is now an official holiday in many countries and events are held all over the world.

2. Mosaic Projects on Display: Hope you take a moment to enjoy the mosaic projects under the main staircase created by 7 & 8th graders in the art elective.  Mosaics are the art of creating images with an assemblage of small pieces of colored glass, stone or other materials.  This technique was first used primarily to decorate walls and floors of cathedrals and other religious buildings. – Ms. Colt

3. Panoramic Photo: The 8th Grade Panoramic Photo will be taken on Wednesday during 2nd period.  Be on your best behavior and follow adult instructions to help make the process go smoothly. Eighth graders, wear blue and white clothes on Wednesday. Show your bronco spirit, 8th graders. Order forms were distributed last Friday during 1stº. – Mr. Rosenberg

4. Yearbook: Order forms are available at the glass display case and they are also available in the Main Office. Simply return the order form with $30 cash or check to reserve your 2009-2010 yearbook. A list of names of all students who have already purchased a yearbook is now posted at the yearbook display by the Main Office. Patriotic Message: Women’s History Month Salutes Sonia Sotomayor
Judge Sonia Sotomayor is the first Latina to sit on the United States Supreme Court. She was a judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit when President Barack Obama picked her to replace retired justice David Souter. Sotomayor was confirmed by a Senate vote of 68-31 on August 6, 2009. Of Puerto Rican descent, she was raised in a housing project in the Bronx, New York by her widowed mother. Sotomayor graduated with honors from Princeton and got her law degree from Yale.

Patriotic Message: Women’s History Month Salutes Mae Jemison
Astronaut Mae Jemison became the first African-American woman to enter space when she served on the crew of the Space Shuttle Endeavor in September 1992. Jemison also founded The Jemison Group, Inc and was a professor in the Environmental Studies Program at Dartmouth College, where she directed the Jemison Institute for Advancing Technology in Developing Countries.

Patriotic Message: Wyoming Territory 1st to Grant Women the Vote
In 1869, Wyoming’s territorial legislature declared that “every woman of the age of twenty-one years, residing in this territory, may at every election…cast her vote.” Though Congress lobbied hard against it, Wyoming’s women kept their right to vote when the territory became a state in 1890. In 1924, the state’s voters elected the nation’s first female governor, Nellie Ross.

Patriotic Message: March is Women’s History Month!
Women’s History Month grew out of a weeklong celebration of women’s contributions to culture, history and society organized by the school district of Sonoma, California, in 1979. In 1987 the event was expanded into the entire month of March. Each year, the National Women’s History Project selects a theme. The 2010 theme, “Writing Women Back into History,” recognizes efforts to document women’s accomplishments and experiences in textbooks and other educational materials.

Patriotic Message: 1961 Kennedy establishes Peace Corps
Newly elected President John F. Kennedy issues an executive order establishing the Peace Corps. During the 1960s and 1970s, thousands of Americans, flocked to serve in dozens of nations. Working side by side with the people of these nations, Peace Corps volunteers helped build sewer and water systems; constructed and taught in schools; assisted in developing new crops and agricultural methods to increase productivity; and participated in numerous other projects.

Patriotic Message: Black History Month Salutes Benjamin Bradley
Benjamin Bradley was an inventor born around 1830. A slave, Bradley was employed at a printing office and later at the Annapolis Naval Academy, where he helped set up scientific experiments. In the 1840s he developed a steam engine for war ships. Unable to patent his work, he sold it and with the proceeds purchased his freedom.

Patriotic Message: Black History Month Salutes Ernest Everett Just
Although he was born in the segregated conditions of the South, Ernest Everett Just became one of the most highly respected scientists of his time, graduating magna cum laude from Dartmouth College in 1907, earning a Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Chicago in 1916, and teaching at Howard University in Washington, D.C. from 1909 until his death in 1941. In addition, he wrote one of the most important scientific text books of the 20th century, Biology of the Cell Surface.

The performance will commence at 12:15 p.m. It is our great fortune to welcome some great Bay Area Blues, and Rhythm and Blues artists to perform in celebration as they educate and rock the Bronc's! It's an honor to announce that Award winning Bay Area Blues Diva, Ms.TIA CARROL will headline the noon-time concert. We are also delighted to announce that joining us this year will be teachers’ students playing the Blues for the Broncos. Last year's concert was an uplifting and joyful event that unified staff and students in celebration. A splendid education into this wonderful sector of African-American culture will be provided. Come listen, dance and celebrate the music that actor-director Morgan Freeman calls " America's Classical Music."– Mr. Lightfoot

Students and staff work hard to bring you events and activities, and ripping down posters announcing those activities disrespects the effort put forth.  As a result, any student found ripping or damaging a poster/flyer, will be made to make 10 posters to replace each one ruined. – Admin

Patriotic Message: Black History Month Salutes James Farmer
In 1942 James Farmer founded the Congress of Racial Equality, a civil rights organization that was the 1st in the USA to use nonviolent tactics to protest racial discrimination. In 1961, the group organized "Freedom Rides" throughout the South. Volunteers traveled on interstate buses, with the black people using the facilities reserved for whites, and the white people using colored facilities. Attacked by mobs on several occasions, the Freedom Riders challenged the federal government to enforce anti-segregation legislation. Farmer was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Clinton in 1998.

Patriotic Message: Black History Month Salutes Charles Hamilton Houston
Charles Hamilton Houston was a powerful advocate of civil rights. Houston earned his A.B. from Amherst College at the age of 19 and began teaching English at Howard University. In 1919 Houston entered Harvard Law School, where he served as the 1st black editor of the Harvard Law Review. He later joined the faculty at Howard University and began preparing young black lawyers, including Thurgood Marshall, to argue cases against discrimination. Houston served as special counsel to the NAACP from 1935 to 1940.

Patriotic Message: Black History Month Salutes Medgar Evers
Medgar Evers was a civil rights leader born in 1925. Dropping out of high school at 17 to join the army, Evers served in World War II. Returning home, he finished high school and later graduated from Alcorn A & M College. Evers became an NAACP field secretary in Jackson. His civil rights work made him many enemies, and on June 11, 1963, Evers was shot and killed by white supremacist Byron de la Beckwith.

Patriotic Message: Black History Month Salutes Althea Gibson
Althea Gibson was an African-American tennis player born in Silver, S.C. In 1948 she won the first of 10 straight national black women's singles championships. She was the first African American to play in the U.S. grass court championships at Forest Hills, N.Y., and at Wimbledon, England. 1971 she was named to the National Lawn Tennis Hall of Fame.

Patriotic Message: Black History Month Salutes Gordon Parks
Best known as an acclaimed photographer, Gordon Parks was also a highly accomplished writer, filmmaker, and composer. Growing up in poverty, Parks managed to become a premier fashion photographer in the 1940s, eventually working for Glamour, Vogue, and other glossy New York magazines. He became the first African American to work as a photographer for the Farm Security Administration, and in 1948, he became the first African American photographer for Life magazine.

Patriotic Message: Black History Month Salutes Charles Richard Drew
Charles Drew was an African-American physician born in Washington D.C. in 1904. A surgeon and a professor at Howard University, he developed a means of preserving blood plasma for transfusion. During World War II he headed the program that sent blood to Great Britain and was the director of the first American Red Cross Blood Bank.

Patriotic Message: Black History Month Salutes Edward Alexander Bouchet Edward Bouchet was an American physicist and chemist born in New Haven, Connecticut in 1952. Bouchet was the first African American to graduate from Yale College. In 1876, upon receiving his Ph.D. in physics from Yale, he became the first African American to earn a doctorate. Bouchet spent his career teaching college chemistry and physics.

Bias: An opinion that strongly favors one side in an argument. - Ms. McNeil

7. Academic Vocabulary Word Contest: Write one paragraph about Bancroft Middle School using this week’s academic vocabulary words of the week: relevant and bias.
